Careers in Aging Caregiver Profile
Randy Few, CDM, CFPP, Island Lake Center in Longwood
I started my food service career working as a bus boy for a restaurant in 1987. Loving the fast-paced industry, I spent the next couple of years as a waiter and knew that I would need to further my education to expand my impact in the culinary industry. I then enrolled in Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts in 1990.
I graduated from culinary school in 1992 and my initial goals were to work in a grand hotel, a PGA country club, and a 4-star restaurant. I accomplished those goals over the next several years and learned so much about the industry while doing so.
One day in 1998, I received a phone call from a corporate recruiter, which after several conversations and me researching the profession, led to me working for an assisted living community as a chef. I felt accomplished serving the senior community, I loved my relationships and interactions with the residents, and found myself looking forward to going to work and working with them in their home. One year later, the company invested in my future and sponsored me to get my Certified Dietary Managers (CDM) license through the Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals.
I have been a CDM, certified food protection professional (CFPP) for over 25 years and have worked in every aspect of senior healthcare including assisted living facilities, skilled nursing communities, and memory care facilities. What I love most about working in a skilled nursing facility is that I get to use my years of experience and passion for food service to serve a population of people who deserve the absolute best from us. I’ve also been fortunate enough to work alongside the most amazing team of individuals who share my same passion for hospitality and have a deep respect for the people who are entrusted with our care.
I feel honored to utilize my culinary knowledge intertwined with my years as a CDM to provide quality food and service, contributing to our residents having the quality of life that they deserve. I highly recommend a career in dietary food service for anyone that has a passion for food and a love for people. My motto is, “Love People, Cook them Tasty Food.”
