Jemila Awini has been a Nursing Home Administrator for 12 years, but her diverse background includes a bachelor’s degree in public relations and a master’s degree government and nonprofit organizations. She was inspired to enter the long term care profession after a visit to her original home in Ghanan, West Africa, where she noticed a tremendous need for senior care. She loves the relationships she forms with residents and learning about their past experiences through the stories that they share. “It’s so humbling to learn about the challenges they have endured, and it’s a privilege to care for them, said Jemila.
As the administrator of Gateway Care Center Post-Acute and Rehabilitation Center in Pinellas Park, Jemila always ensures her team feels valued and that her residents receive exceptional care and life-enriching experiences. She walks the center daily to interact with her staff and residents and always keeps her door open to family members so that everyone is working together to ensure residents’ needs are met.
For those considering a career in long term care, Jemila notes that it’s important to enter the profession for the right reasons. “Long term care isn’t for everyone; it takes patience and dedication,” said Jemila. “We’re being entrusted to take care of a very special group of people, and your heart must be in it.”
