Florida Health Care Association (FHCA) recently awarded Modinat Lowe, CNA at DeBary Health and Rehabilitation Center, with a Bruce Taylor Scholarship. Modinat currently holds her CNA certification but has goals of becoming a Nurse Practioner so that she can continue to positively impact the health and lives of many. She shares, “I enjoy coming into my job to take care of people who are not able to take care of themselves; it makes me feel good as a nursing aide when I can put a smile on my residents’ face.”
Growing up in a remote area of Nigeria in West Africa, Modinat Lowe learned that opportunities couldn’t be taken for granted, and to succeed in life, you must prevail in your hardships. Modinat was deeply affected by the startling rate of infant mortality and morbidity in her area. With determination and a positive mindset, she decided to pursue a nursing career in Nigeria to better help the less privileged and to do her part in improving the health care system. Unfortunately, her dream was cut short after she lost her father, and her family was unable to continue financially supporting her through university. She was distraught but knew there was nothing more that she could do and that she had to cease her dreams of advancing her education entirely. However, her fate took a turn when she was eventually given the opportunity to relocate to the United States, where financial aid and scholarships for college were far more accessible. Modinat worked a full-time job, studied, and became the sole provider for her two young children and her husband. That tireless dedication continues today in her caregiving at DeBary, where she is committed to providing the best service to residents and ensuring they are being treated with the utmost respect and care.
Chad Hurta, Administrator of DeBary Health and Rehabilitation Center, says, “From day one, Modinat impressed me greatly with her focus and determination. Her attention to her residents’ care is always her primary focus. She always shows great interest…Her hard work and effort will get her very far in life, and there is no doubt in my mind that she will succeed.”
